Opening in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in 1975, "Space Mountain" has been a long-time favorite of many of the theme park guests. This was the first of the three "mountains" in the Magic Kingdom's mountain range and still remains an incredibly popular ride today.
I had the opportunity of first being able to ride "Space Mountain" in the mid 1980's, back when RCA was the sponsor, a rocket with astronauts riding it was on display outside the building, the seating on the rockets had people basically sitting in somebody else's lap and wearing a seatbelt, and finally, the ride exited right back into Tomorrowland instead of the current arcade. Back then it was considered a long line when the line queue snaked four rows deep into each side of the loading station. It was easy for non-riding guests to accommodate the riders through the main line queue and quickly join them again just a few moments later.
The mid-1990's brought about interesting changes to "Space Mountain." FedEx became the sponsor and the theming was changed throughout the attraction. The people waiting in the main line queues for each station were then entertained by "SMTV" (hosted by Mario Lopez of Saved By The Bell) as they waited in the longer lines which often filled the entire line queue. By this point the rocket trains were different as they now had individual seats for each rider complete with lap bars, and the scenery and theming along the exit was changed to reflect the New Tomorrowland and new sponsor of FedEx.
Right now the current version of "Space Mountain" isn't much different from the 1990's version. The FedEx references were removed, they stopped showing "SMTV" in the final part of the line queue, and the main line queue to the split-off for the loading stations was made to accommodate FastPass, but otherwise the general experience is about the same. And just recently in late April of 2009, "Space Mountain" (link goes to one of the last guidemaps showing the Mountain still open) finally went down for a lengthy refurbishment and additions to the ride. Rumors are saying that we can expect new theming, upgraded track and rocket cars (with a soundtrack), and possibly a few more surprises when the ride re-opens again sometime this Fall.
As you can probably guess, I've been a fan of "Space Mountain" ever since my first ride over twenty years ago. I loved the early 1980's version of the ride as well as the 1990's version when it had "SMTV" and was sponsored by FedEx. I've ran in several of the early morning "Space Mountain" mini-marathons in my youth, and today I grab FastPasses for the ride whenever possible. No trip to the Magic Kingdom is complete without a couple of rides on "Space Mountain."
