Marvel Super Hero Island - June 1999 - 01 Marvel Super Hero Island - June 1999 - 02

It's big, green and mean.

This is a roller coaster not to underestimate.  It's intense and intimidating enough to challenge even the biggest lovers of roller coasters and thrill rides.

But in addition to its intensity and non-stop action, from the launch up the lift hill to the final brake run, this roller coaster is also a work of art.

The views of the "Incredible Hulk Coaster" from across the lagoon are just incredible.  Its gentle sweeping curves and one inversion and maneuver after another is classic.  It starts with an uphill launch into a zero-G roll followed by a splashdown in the water, a giant cobra roll, and a massive vertical loop before roaring under the walkway and taking a circle around the lift hill.  The coaster then hits a corkscrew before diving down and going through a second vertical loop and the rest of the track.  Because of its design and layout of the park, everybody can see that signature first half of the track, but most of the second half is hidden behind the trees.

On this ride, we play the role of a volunteer assisting Dr. Bruce Banner in his never ending research into curing his deadly disease.  He has a new experiment and we're to sit on a special sled as it goes into the Project Gamma tube.  Everything seems to go fine at the start, but then things quickly take a turn for the worse.

"I think . . . I think this time it's going to work!"

A malfunction happens and a computerized voice warns us, "WARNING:  COOLANT LEVEL DROPPING!"

"No . . . No! . . . NO!!!"

As Dr. Banner is yelling his frustration, we're transformed into the terrifying creature and are thrown out of the tube at 40 mph, immediately rolling over into the zero-G roll and diving down to the surface of the water.  The rest is history as the coaster roars along its steel track, going through one maneuver after another after another and does not give up until the final brake run.

For you movie fans out there, the "Incredible Hulk Coaster" was a feature of the 1999 remake of The House on Haunted Hill. In the movie the coaster is known as "Terror Incognita" and is a little bit more interesting than the real life coaster.  Then again, the movie version features an amusing elevator ride to the top of the coaster and the movie runs two trains simultaneously (within seconds of each other instead of minutes) to create a really awesome scare tactic in one of the scenes.

The movie wasn't a huge hit in the theaters, but it did help boost the marketing for the "Incredible Hulk Coaster" and Islands of Adventure theme park as a whole.  A lot of people had to get down to Florida to experience the park and all of its fun rides for themselves.  This coaster was just one of a few of them in the park, but it became one of the best sit-down steel coasters in the world and quickly reached that legend status.  Like "Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man" and "Dueling Dragons," "Incredible Hulk Coaster" was yet another highly rated thrill ride in the brand new theme park.

When it comes to riding the coaster, everybody has their own preferred row.  Some people like to sit in the very back, others prefer somewhere in the middle, and lots of people want to wait extra for the chance to ride up front.  For this ride the front row is king but all other rows are very good.  Because of the consistently high speeds and smoothness of the large inversions, there's little difference between the riding between the second and last rows on the train.

If you can handle it, you'll want to ride this coaster in the day and again at night as it will be a completely different experience.  It's hard to top sitting in the very front row as the train races along the track in the darkness.

The "Incredible Hulk Coaster" is an outstanding roller coaster that does not give up or even pause in the action until the very end, and it is definitely something to experience at least twice while visiting Islands of Adventure.
