of the "Maharajah Jungle Trek" animal trail in the Asia section of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park -
presented in 4:3 regular and 16:9 widescreen formats!
Opening with neighboring "Kali River Rapids" on March 18, 1999, the "Maharajah Jungle Trek" was the second major self-guided animal trail walking tour added to the young theme park. This trail takes park guests past a variety of animals found in the regions of southern Asia, from the mighty Bengal Tiger to the small but still important fruit bats.
The story behind the "Maharajah Jungle Trek" is that the trail itself takes us through an old sultan's palace. During its glory days, the palace was a hunting lodge and used by a variety of kings before the palace was abandoned and slowly reclaimed by nature. Walls and towers have slowly decayed, and vines and other vegetation has now grown into the walls and footpaths. The aviary, for example, has now taken over a former grand ballroom that once entertained the king's guests in the palace.
The "Maharajah Jungle Trek" can be quite popular at times, and for one reason or another people tend to go through this attraction in groups. It's not uncommon to see a bunch of screaming kids go running from one exhibit to another, pushing their way in front of people and generally being a nuisance without the parents doing anything to stop them. If you see a bunch of people about to enter the animal trail, it's best to wait a few minutes and let them have a head start. As far as viewing the animals, they tend to be more active in the early mornings and later in the evenings. Disney's Animal Kingdom usually isn't open late except for a couple of days each year, so it's generally best to visit the trail earlier in the day rather than later. The hot Florida sun can be intese for the animals, so a lot of them tend to lay low and stay in the shadows during the day. Winter visits are better than summer ones.
Do take note that the tigers can usually be seen from one of several different viewing areas. It's fairly easy to tell where they are though because you'll usually see a big crowd around the viewing areas whenever the tigers are active.
