What is The Florida Project?

blan

The Florida Project is an ongoing effort to share past memories and look at the current state of the Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando in Orlando, Florida.

I've been a lifetime fan of the Disney parks since my parents started taking me there in the early 1980's. Central Florida has always been a second home to me.

My family has always been real big on collecting the different park guide maps and brochures during each of our visits. Every trip down to Florida, we would always first stop at the official Florida welcome center on I-75, and then make a stop at the Disney welcome center along the way in Ocala, FL (no longer in existence). An hour later we would be on Disney property. After each trip we would have a bag full of different brochures and guides to not only the Disney parks, but whatever else we found interesting in the area. Disney, Universal, Busch Gardens, Sea World, Gatorland, Kennedy Space Center, Splendid China --- we collected them all.

Recently, while cleaning out a few rooms, we discovered a few of our old boxes jammed full of the old Disney theme park and resorts brochures. Seeing how many of them were vintage and still in very good condition, the idea of building this web site was born. The question was simple: How many other people would like to see the old information and remember past trips to the theme parks?

That question sparked other questions like:

  • Who else would like to remember how the Magic Kingdom looked before add-ons like Mickey's ToonTown Fair and Splash Mountain?

  • How about seeing how little there was to do when the Disney-MGM Studios first opened?

  • What was EPCOT Center like back in its glory days around 1989 and 1990?

Thanks to my dedication and this web site, questions like that can now be answered. Now you can see actual theme park guide maps and brochures from twenty years ago. Now it's possible to see previews for coming attractions like Norway and Typhoon Lagoon.

The Florida Project doesn't stop there.

This web site also takes a look at the present state of the theme parks and resorts, and ultimately this web site will discuss the theme parks and offer a forum for everybody to join in the discussions. Current guide maps, brochures, and digital photos will be available for everyone to enjoy.

Right now the website has reached Phase 2 with the addition of Universal Orlando content.  Old park guidemaps and resort guides along with digital pictures are currently being uploaded.

In addition to all of that, this web site is also home to the famous Pele - Tiki Goddess of Fire picture that's capturing the interest and curiosity of many visitors.

Is this a real spirit from beyond, or is the fire just playing a trick on us? Either way, we'll never know. Check out the picture for yourself on the Adventureland page in the Magic Kingdom section in "Widescreen Wallpaper".

As you visit the different areas of this web site, feel free to download and share as many pictures as you wish. My only requests are that A) you do not modify the picture(s), that whatever information is currently on there remains on the picture(s), and B) that you provide a link back to where you found the picture(s). The scanned and digital picture(s) may not be altered in any way.
