Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant
(1973 - present)
History and photos of the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant, a counter-service restaurant in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
Located at the border of Main Street, USA and Tomorrowland is the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant, a counter-service restaurant that has an open structure and multiple levels of seating. This restaurant is also part of the path between the two lands.
Originally known as the Plaza Pavilion, the restaurant opened back in 1973. What's somewhat unique about this restaurant is that it remained relatively unchanged from 1973 until 2005 when it became the Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station. That change in menu did not do too well, and in 2010 the restaurant became the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant, its current version.
For many people, the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant is some place simply to pass through on their way between Main Street, USA and Tomorrowland, or vice versa. It's common to walk up the ramp, smell the delicious food (especially when they used to serve pizza), turn past the counter, and then descend the ramp and continue on your journey.
The restaurant was merely a passing point and not a destination, and that's really a shame as this is still one cool-looking restaurant. The series of seating areas set up like terraces, the 1970s futuristic look to the restaurant, and the great view of Cinderella Castle still make the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant a very photogenic place, both inside and outside the structure.
Back in the days before the morning show in front of the Main Street, USA train station, the Main Street entrance to the Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant used to serve as one of the farthest points you could access before the park was officially open each day. There would be a rope stretching across the entrance. Once the welcoming spiel was complete over the park's intercom system, a cast member would remove the rope and let the crowds go charging into Tomorrowland for the daily race to Space Mountain.
The Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant is a secondary (or even a third) dining option for many people. It doesn't have the fantastic theming or appeal like Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, the Pinocchio Village Haus, or even Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. But when the other restaurants are jam packed at lunchtime, those issues can easily be overlooked when it comes to the normally quieter Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant.
|TRIVIA||On the opposite side of Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe used to be called the Tomorrowland Terrace. The restaurant changed names (and its theming) during Tomorrowland's conversion to New Tomorrowland in 1994.|
