History and photos of The Barnstormer kiddie roller coaster in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
When the Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, the theme park had six themed lands.
The seventh land, Mickey's Birthdayland, would open in 1988 to celebrate the 60th birthday of Mickey Mouse. It was a simple expansion of the Magic Kingdom, but it would eventually pave the way towards bigger entertainment. One of the attractions in Mickey's Birthdayland was Grandma Duck's Farm, a small petting zoo that involved a barn and some farm animals.
After Mickey's birthday celebration ended, Mickey's Birthdayland underwent a quick conversion to become Mickey's Starland in 1990. The land would remain this way until in closed in early 1996 for a major conversion.
On October 1, 1996, the land re-opened as Mickey's ToonTown Fair. Although Grandma Duck's Farm was removed, the barn remained and was re-themed to be used in the land's most popular attraction, a junior roller coaster called The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm.
The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm is a junior roller coaster themed to a flight school taught by Goofy. The line queue would pass through an old barn where Goofy did his research and designed his airplane. Guests would then make their way through the farm and past the amusing plants until they reached the hanger. They would then board the biplane-themed coaster train and be off on their crazy flight.
The roller coaster began with a right turn out of the hanger and then up a lift hill. It would then make a left-handed diving turn and basically completing a figure-eight pattern before "crashing" through the barn and flying past some Audio-Animatronic chickens (originally from the World of Motion ride at Epcot). The coaster would then head back to the makeshift airport and make a quick "landing". Taxi lights would then guide the aircraft back into the hanger / loading station.
That's how guests experienced The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm until it closed on February 11, 2011 to be re-themed with the new expansion of Fantasyland.
On March 12, 2012, The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm re-opened as The Barnstormer.
Maintaining the airplane theme, the new version of the ride has a story where Goofy is now a daredevil pilot known as The Great Goofini. Guests now fly along as The Great Goofini races around air racing pylons before "crashing" through a billboard near the end of the ride. The line queue was also changed and placed in the ride's former exit area. This time around The Barnstormer was made part of Disney's FASTPASS system.
Designed by Vekoma, The Barnstormer is a short roller coaster that's meant for the younger visitors. The junior roller coaster reaches a height of 30 feet, travels along 679 feet of track, and it reaches a top speed of 25 mph. It's a perfect way for the younger thrill seekers to have some fun until they're tall enough for the bigger roller coasters such as Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
That being said, The Barnstormer is at its busiest throughout the afternoon. Wait times can reach and exceed 30 minutes. For some extra fun, take a spin on this ride at night.
