History and photos of the Adventureland section of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.
How do you define an adventurous place?
- Is it in equatorial Africa in the early 1900s?
- How about the exotic and remote South Seas in the vast Pacific Ocean?
- Could it be in the treacherous Caribbean islands in the 1600s during the golden age of piracy?
- What about the mysterious land of Arabia in the Middle East?
All of those concepts of adventure can be found in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom. When walking through the themed land you'll see, hear and experience concepts of adventure from many exotic locations and past times.
The original version of the Magic Kingdom's Adventureland featured three attractions and two places to eat. You could explore the Swiss Family Island Treehouse, sail exotic rivers on the Jungle Cruise, or sit back and relax while listening to parrots and birds entertain you at the Tropical Serenade. Pirates of the Caribbean, one of the land's and the Magic Kingdom's most popular rides, wouldn't open until two years later in 1973.
Once the Caribbean Plaza section and Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride opened in 1973, the next major change in the land wouldn't occur until 1997 with the opening of Shrunken Ned's Junior Jungle Boats, a pay-for attraction where you could pilot your own miniature Jungle Cruise-style boat past obstacles. September of 1997 saw the temporary closing of The Enchanted Tiki Birds. The tiki birds would re-open in the spring of 1998 as The Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management.
The next major change to Adventureland occurred in 2001 with the addition of Agrabah and the opening of The Magic Carpets of Aladdin.
In 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean went through an extensive refurbishment that included changes in the ride's entrance and several scenes on the ride itself. The classic boat ride was bringing elements and new characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Pirates of the Caribbean re-opened in July of 2006 with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in the theaters.
2011 saw the transformation of The Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management back into its original format. The classic Audio-animatronic bird show re-opened as Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room.
Since 2011, Adventureland has also seen the additions of Tinker Bell's Magical Nook, a character meet and greet, and A Pirate's Adventure --- Treasures of the Seven Seas, an interactive attraction. Current snacking and dining options in Adventureland include Aloha Isle, Sunshine Tree Terrace, and the Tortuga Tavern.
