The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera photos (EXTINCT!)
(June 7, 1990 - October 20, 2002)
History and photos of the now extinct The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera simulator ride in Production Central in Universal Studios Florida.
The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera was an original attraction that opened on June 7, 1990 with the rest of Universal Studios Florida.
The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera began with a preshow hosted by Yogi Bear and his sidekick, Boo Boo. Yogi informs us that we're here for a demonstration in animation. Animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera join us and draw Elroy Jetson by hand. Elroy flies around the screen as we're introduced in the next generation of animation involving computers. The computer draws a three-dimensional recreation of Dick Dastardly's spaceship. Dick Dastardly and Muttley suddenly pop up from inside the spaceship and demand that they be the stars of Hanna-Barbera's next movie. Hanna and Barbera decline, and the villains kidnap Elroy. Dick Dastardly flies away before the computer explodes. It's up to us to join Yogi and Boo Boo, and save Elroy Jetson.
The main room has a series of simulator pods (each seating four people in two rows) all facing towards the main screen in the front of the room. The very front of the room has stationary seating for those people who want to experience the ride/show, but cannot ride in the simulators for one reason or another. Once everybody is seated and the lap bars are lowered, it's time to continue with the ride.
Yogi Bear is at the controls of our spaceship with Boo Boo as his navigator / co-pilot. A giant rubber band launches us from Yogi's home base all the way back to Bedrock in "The Flintstones." We race through a rock quarry and narrowly miss Fred Flintstone while he's busy at work. After squeezing through a rock canyon we're in the town of Bedrock and hot on Dick Dastardly's trail, passing familiar characters on the city streets. We pass by Fred and Barney again while they're riding in Fred's car. We follow Disk Dastardly into a burning building and are magically transported to another cartoon.
Once clear of the smoke we find ourselves in a cemetery. We narrowly avoid a collision with the Mystery Machine being driven by Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. We turn around and chase Dick Dastardly into a haunted mansion at the top of a hill. Our spaceship flies from one scary room to another before we have another encounter with Scooby and Shaggy (and a couple of ghosts as well). We follow Dastardly through another vortex and into another cartoon.
Now we're in the future and flying around Orbit City in "The Jetsons." Jane and George Jetson (no Judy or Astro on the ride) spot their son in trouble and join with us in the chase to rescue him. We chase Dick Dastardly into the Coney Skyland amusement park and follow him on a massive roller coaster. Rosie the robot is riding with George and Jane, and she uses her robotic arm to grab Dick Dastardly and Muttley, allowing Elroy to jump to his father. Elroy is saved and the villains crash into one of the rides. The cops suddenly surround Dick Dastardly and Muttley, capturing them and hauling them off to jail. The Jetsons thank Yogi for his help and we head back to Yogi's home base. As we're coming in for final approach, Yogi is concerned that he's never landed before. We make a crash landing and all is well.
The post-show area for The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera featured a variety of hands-on exhibits for kids to learn about the animation process, all themed to the characters we encountered on the ride.
The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera closed its doors on October 20, 2002. Demand for the attraction was shrinking and many of the kids failed to connect with the classic animated characters. Times were calling for an update of the attraction.
Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast was the replacement for The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera. It opened six months later on April 11, 2003.
