The Walt Disney World Monorail System - presented in both 4:3 regular and 16:10 widescreen formats!
Opening along with the Magic Kingdom in October of 1971, the WDW monorails have never ceased to impress or amaze visitors over its thirty-eight year history of operation. They're sleek. They're futuristic. They're efficient. They can be enjoyed without going into the parks. And best of all, they're just plain cool. How many times have you seen people stop to gaze at the monorails whenever they pass by? It doesn't matter if you're in front of the Magic Kingdom, in Future World at Epcot, walking through the TTC, or just wandering around the Magic Kingdom resorts. It's nearly impossible not to watch the trains as they seemingly glide along the track.Currently, guests have the option to ride on one of three monorail lines at Walt Disney World. The Express line transports guests directly between the Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC). Parallel to the Express line is the Resort line. In addition to stopping at the Magic Kingdom and TTC, this line also makes stops at the Contemporary, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian resorts. The Express and Resort monorails travel in opposite directions around Seven Seas Lagoon. The third monorail line is the Epcot line, going directly from Epcot to the TTC.Back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, when Walt Disney World was going through a major expansion and addition phase, there was a lot of talk and rumors about the expansion of the monorail system. In fact, there used to be a map in the old CommuniCore in Epcot showing a complete map of the Walt Disney World resort which included the layout of the future monorail plans. There were plans of expanding the Epcot monorail station and running another monorail line down to the Disney-MGM Studios. This would have made stops at the Swan & Dolphin resorts along the way. The plans also called for yet another monorail line going out to the Downtown Disney shopping complex.Alas, those plans never fully materialized. Whether it was a strictly a cost problem or if some other hidden objections got in the way, we'll probably never know. With today's management and the overall state of the resort, I doubt if we'll see any monorail expansion anytime soon.Next time you're outside the Swan and Dolphin buildings, take a look at the large square groupings of rooms painted in black on each building. Those rooms can be removed from the buildings without affecting the buildings' structural stability. And why would those rooms be intentionally removed? What was originally planned to run through those resort hotels? Why the monorail, of course!
