Opening on May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios became the third official theme park at the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida. The Disney movie theme park opened a full year before the rival Universal Studios Florida theme park (opened June 1, 1990) just twenty minutes up Interstate-4. When the park first opened, the general public was very critical about the lack of theme park attractions. The theme park's two main rides ("The Great Movie Ride" and "Backstage Studio Tour") weren't enough to go along with the other shows and walk-through tours. The park's first E-Ticket ride, "Star Tours", opened in December of that year, and other add-on attractions quickly followed. What started as a half-day park visit soon evolved into a full day's adventure complete with a nighttime fireworks show called "Sorcery in the Sky". Today's Studios theme park is now an attraction-filled theme park complete with thrilling and highly themed E-Ticket rides ("Rock 'n' Roller Coaster" and "The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror"), two action-filled stunt shows ("Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" and "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show"), and an incredibly popular nighttime show ("Fantasmic!"). As new attractions are being built, Disney's Hollywood Studios will continue to evolve into a bigger and better theme park.
